>> WELCOME TO MY INTERNET OF THINGS (IoT) BLOG!

So; what is the Internet of Things (IoT) and why is it a point of interest?

  • The Internet of Things (IoT) is a computing concept that describes a future where everyday physical objects will be connected to the Internet and be able to identify themselves to other devices.
    definition from www.technopedia.com

While the concept of IoT is not new it has become a major interest area specifically due to the drop in the cost of technology and the new masses of opportunities that it creates. Earlier this year Google made a bold step with the acquisition of Nest Labs for $3.2 billion USD - specifically around the notion of a smart "learning" thermostat. They are not the only ones getting involved; a number of very large players are making their claim in this space such as Apple, ARM, Freescale, Intel, SAP, Salesforce.com in a diverse range of industries.

There are so many areas that one can focus on within IoT - ranging from hardware, sensors, storage, infrastructure, data analytics, reporting and end-user interaction. It is obvious where most of the tech giants will streamline their efforts - the risk in this environment is that there is a blatant disregard for trying to standardize the process and technology as these companies produce vendor lock-in environments to maintain an upper hand.

So; let's try to understand IoT better and work on a way to within the development communities and focus groups push the message of standardization; not vendor specific but open, flexible and adaptable to the suit the requirements of each situation.

In this blog series I will cover the "latest" buzz around IoT as they come up and also write up some development hints and tips that I have learnt over the years that may be useful around the field of IoT (specifically embedded development) and thrash around some ideas as to how to make this field interesting and sustainable.
